Review – Tiny Twisted Tale’s and The Monster Books

I love books.

If fact, I love them a little too much. I have so many that there is literally no chance that I will fit in reading them all in before I die. Even if I do live until 92 (that’s what I am aiming for)

I hope that my love of books is being passed down to Baby B who does enjoy a good book. I often find him sat by his book shelf flicking through a good picture book. We read ‘Amazing Aeroplanes’ at least twice a day and ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ remains a firm favourite 5 months later.

As a book fan I was very happy to review a number of books for My Little Big Town.

I reviewed two sets of books, aimed at different ages groups. What jumps out straightaway is that they are different. No run of mill children’s books to be found here. They are quirky, imaginative and interesting.

A Tiny Twisted Tale – Jenny, Pale Henry, and Stuart the Bug Eating Man

Jenny and Pale Henry are for children age 7+ and Stuart the Bug Eating Man for children aged 5 – 8

Each tale is wonderfully illustrated and  the tales, although a little dark at times, some might even say a little frightening, all have a happy ending. In fact, what the tales do, without making it screaming obvious to children, is help them get over fears and issues. Jenny for example is a Werewolf hunting 8 year old. Now I would imagine that most 8 years are rather scared of Werewolfs but not Jenny. We felt that the book takes a common theme that children are afraid of and demeans the stereotypical frightening characters and makes them non threatening.

Twisted Tales

Tiny Twisted Tales

Pale Henry, is about a little boy who doesn’t like going outside. But then one day he faces his fear and goes out to make friends and play with other children. The underlying theme is exactly that – face your fears.

As for Stuart the Bug Eating man, well the poem explains itself in a lighthearted way. You’ll have to read it to find out what made Stuart’s wife go from annoyed to happy! See below 🙂

The Monster Books…… & Where’s the scone?

These books were right up Baby B’s street. Aimed at pre-schoolers, they are colourful, graphic, and eye-catching. We got the Monster book of numbers and the Monster book of colours. B really enjoyed them. They are totally different to all his other counting books. The monsters are fun and not scary and he laughed at me trying to say their names. They are now regular fav’s in his book collection!

The Monster Books....

Where’s The Scone is also a number book but with animals. In typical Calvin Innes style,  the animals aren’t your regular animals, there are Gnu’s and Yeti’s eating spaghetti in there. It is a little random  being that it is about a scone, but you can’t help but be amused and smile when reading it. They certainly captured Baby B’s attention.

We really enjoyed these books. If you are looking for something a little different, these books are what you are looking for. Honestly, you don’t know what to expect on every page and the illustrations are brilliant, funny and wonderfully colourful. Enjoy!
