Family, Fun & Frolics #S2S2D

Today myself and Gretta at Mums Do Travel are co-hosting the #S2S2D blog hop. My first blog hop and all.

I am thrilled to be part of this blog hop, initially set up to support Emma at Crazy with Twins during a seriously tough time as she underwent intensive radiotherapy treatment for a Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma. This meant that she would be isolated from her children and husband whilst the radiation levels in her body subsided. To go through all this at the age of 27, with such strength and courage, is really quite remarkable.

The amazing positive attitude that Emma approached her treatment with has obviously worked and she is already able to be with her family again and hug her gorgeous children. Yippee!!

However, the blog hop continues with gusto! Now with a new additional aim of not only keeping the cheer and humour coming for Emma but also to raise awareness of Cancer and encourage people to check for lumps and bumps. Emma would also like to raise awareness of the great work that Maggie’s Cancer Centre’s do for both those with cancer and their families.

My Post…..

I was thinking long and hard about what I could write that would be amusing and humorous for my blog post as blog hop host (try saying that quickly!), and would hopefully make Emma smile. As we are currently on holiday with the family I thought I would write about them…

Let me give you a bit of background on my family. Currently in the house we have myself and my soon to be husband, my mother (Nonna) and my 82 year old Grandmother (Bis-Nonna), both of whom are Italian born and bred in Egypt, and of course Baby B, who was two yesterday, born and bred in Surrey!

My mother and grandmother personify your classic Arab/Italian ladies. They like to mother you, care for you and ultimately tend to your every need! They are not happy unless they are cooking, cleaning, serving and generally doing anything other than relaxing! Whilst this is fantastic, it can also get a tad annoying! You can’t do anything for yourself. As soon as you go to get out of your seat they are up before you, asking what you would like. If my fella was on his way to the garage to strip down an engine, the Nonna’s would check to make sure he didn’t want them to do it! My other half could not believe his luck when he first started meeting the family. If they are not doing something for him, they are constantly trying to stick a beer or glass of wine in his hand.

We are a close family, a common trait with Italians. Despite Bis-Nonna living in Spain, we are on Skype daily to talk with her, and this is a little ditty from a Skype conversation five years ago…

Picture the scene if you will……Christmas day 2008 . My first Christmas with my other half. Christmas morning and we are booting up the computer to wish the family Merry Christmas. I am talking to my Mum and Sister on Skype when my other half walks into view of the camera carrying a pile of presents, wearing nothing more than his birthday suit! The webcam wasn’t a built in one and had unfortunately pointed itself down a tad! As he approached the camera, which was now at  the perfect level, my mum and sister scream as if a flasher had just jumped out at them on a Sunday morning stroll. It was the perfect eyeful!

My other half doesn’t embarrass easily so thankfully once the girls had stopped screaming we all had a laugh. It was quite an introduction to the family! The news spread like wildfire, and what made us laugh the most was Bis Nonna back in Spain. Within minutes she was calling on Skype, with her opening words ‘I hear there is willy to see here somewhere’! She was truly gutted that she had missed it.

This is fresh in my mind as only yesterday we were all sat in the garden and my other half was trying to discreetly remove his wet trunks from under his towel. Bis Nonna cottoned onto what he was doing and casually informed him in her lovely Italian accent, ‘I don’t know why you are bothering I have seen it all anyway’. As my other half tried to correct her and remind her that she had actually missed the ‘Skype Gate’ she went on to inform us that she has a picture of ‘it’ on her computer.

Whilst my other half was chocking on his beer, we established that the picture she has is one I had taken of my other half  in bed under a sheet. It was on her computer from when I had synced my phone some years back. She stated in no uncertain terms that whilst it was covered up ‘you can definitely see it’.

I checked the computer, and sure enough……..there the photo is………..and you can see it. 🙂

She is 82 yrs old, going on 18, she has her health and is happy. And that my friends is all that matters! 🙂
