Welcome to the Chickens

In a rather bold move we have added three new additions to the family. No I haven’t miraculously popped out triplets, we have bought three lovely chickens, which are currently pooing all over the back garden, or ‘gar-get’ as Baby B still insists on calling it.

Meet, Audrey the French Maran,

and Mable the Light Sussex.

The new additions to the house were inspired by friends that have chickens and of course, Baby B’s love of birds. Sadly, due to the  close proximity of the neighbours (as in, right next door!), we were unable to get a Rooster. Of course much to B’s disappointment, as he makes a point of repeating, ‘Not a Rooster, its a chicken’. Some children are never happy!

So here they are, literally ruling the roost as they say. Audrey the larger french one is definitely top of the pecking order. To be honest I am a little scared of her. Mabel and Aggie are slightly more friendly. We have been sure to handle them and give them lots of love each day and it is already paying off. They are lovely animals and great for B who every morning goes and opens the door to the coop and checks for eggs. So far we have had 7 eggs. Not bad for a week.

Daddy A had the first egg for brekkie and it was a double yoke! Sure sign they are of good stock!

Fried anyone?

Fried anyone?

Have to admit that I am still a little freaked out by the egg straight from the chicken still warm straight onto the plate thing but I am sure I will get my head round it. Did you know that the eggs we buy in the supermarket can sometimes be over 40 days old by the time we eat them?!

Anyway, so despite the copious amount of poo, adding to my already very glamours evenings of cleaning up toddler poo, there are three key things I love about the Chickens;

1) They put themselves to bed! So sweet. As soon as it gets dark off they go.

2) They eat spiders! What is not to love about that.

3) They provide an area to put Baby B into when he has misbehaved! 🙂 and a place for me to send Daddy A too when he is annoying me! 🙂

    Love it – where we stayed in Cornwall recently, part of the deal was that we looked after the chickens. The kids thought it was a great idea although somehow they never seemed to be actually in with them! Lots of eggs though!
    Welcome to your new additions!

    I’m just curious to know (partly because I’m very OCD about bacteria and germs), do you have to get shots for chickens you personally own? Kind of like when you have a pet cat or dog. I know nothing about chickens. lol and I would be a little freaked out about eating the eggs fresh from the chicken, too, like you mentioned. Lol! But as it turns out, we buy farm eggs straight from a chicken farm at a local farm store. No supermarket eggs for us! Wow I did not know store eggs could be at least 40 days old!! Omg sounds a bit disgusting now.

    So cute your son loves birds!! Hmm, you should homeschool! Hehehe 😉
    Great post!
