We avoided it for nearly three years, but a couple of weeks ago, we cracked and allowed a Disney CD to enter the car. The Toddler’s car music as I now call it.
I can already tell that this was a BIG mistake.
I no longer know what is No 1 in the charts, or if the Spice Girls are planning another reunion. My mornings previously spent chuckling along with Dave and Lisa on Capital or taking in a debate on LBC, are now full of dramatic, character filled tunes from the Lion King and Jungle book.
The main problem is that you can’t help but get into them. I sing along with gusto, encouraged by B laughing in the back with shouts of ‘more’. Its amazing, how good one sounds when the music is turned up and you are effectively comparing your voice to that of a child. I think I sound great! This results in me making a complete tit of myself at traffic lights when I can feel the men in the white van alongside me laughing at my rather energetic rendition of ‘The Bare Necessities’, to a seeming empty car, as the privacy glass obscures B in the back.
When we are in the car together, the husband and I often find ourselves doing a duet. We don’t even discuss it, it just happens! I know we both secretly think that we are on a West End stage. I actually found myself closing my eyes as I reached the crescendo of ‘Hakuna Matata’ the other day. Loser!
So there we have it. It has begun, as soon as he gets into the car, calls for ‘I just can’t wait to be king’ have begun before I have even tighten the straps of his car seat. It’s futile trying to argue it, we might as well all sing along and it enjoy.
It won’t be long before we have a stroppy teenager on our hands who will only listen to heavy metal.
Saying that, I have a long game. Sell the car and say that the CD only worked in that particular motor. Genius.
I love this Sam, thankfully we are not at this stage, as fun and cute as it sounds i’m going to steer clear of any toddler music cd’s for as long as possible. Quick sell the car, bring back chat shows! x
Like you, we resisted the children’s music in the car for a long time, until we realised that it was a good way to stop the screaming! My daughter is currently completely obsessed with the song Mamma Mia (her name is Mia and I played it to her once because I thought she’d like it, big mistake) and she will listen to nothing else. She screams if I try to sing along though, even when I tell her that I used to be in the choir, I can’t be that bad! I must admit that sometimes when I’m driving alone I do have a good singalong to the Frozen soundtrack though!
Haha, I love that we aren’t allowed to sing along too. Unless instructed to do so. Which I do get sometime, ‘Mumma you sing that bit’. I however was not in a choir! 😉 I rather like the Frozen song too! xx
I know Sam! It’s Mary poppins in our car… ( you right like you speak Sam,! That’s a real skill.. Keep it up!
