The sequel to How to Train Your Dragon is not your average run of the mill ‘Must get another one out quickly while the kids are still interested’, kids sequel it is well thought out, fast paced and full of action just like the first.
We are now in a world where Viking and Dragon live side by side and Astrid and Hiccup are an item! Hiccup, not ready to be chief yet is thirsty for adventure and so, on one of his many scouting trips away from Berk, he discovers a Dragon haven but that is not all that he unearths in the process.
This sequel is packed full of dragons of all shapes and sizes, fire breathers, ice breathers, as well as the usual familiar faces of Storm Fly, Hookfang and of course Toothless. However, this film is slightly more grown up from the last, dealing with the issues surrounding a fractured family, love, fear and finally death.
Luckily it all goes over my three year old’s head and he just loved it for the fact that, with his newly discovered spine spikes, Toothless was able to do even more exciting flying with Hiccup, as well as the odd rescue mission!
Elodie aged 5 loved it as much as the first and in the typical ‘eeeeew grosse’ phase she is in at the moment, found Ruffnut’s obsession with Eret son of Eret, a bit ‘eeeeew grosse’!
So overall How to Train Your Dragon sees the welcomed return of Hiccup, Astrid and the rest of the Dragon- flying cast and the endless action packed adventure is still there, with the added bonus of some super-sized dragons, just to really make sure that the kids are hooked!
Pretty sure this is a film we will be watching more then once in our house. Here’s a couple of comments from our reviewers:
Elodie, aged 5 on Hiccup’s Mother, a Dragon flyer! – “When does she sleep? When does she eat? When does she play?” Me: “Elodie she’s a Mother we don’t have time to do any of that”
Leo, aged 3 – “Mummy if I ask Father Christmas for a Dragon for Christmas will he eat the Reindeer?” A valid question i think you will agree.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 is out on DVD and Blu-ray on 17th November from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
