Always one to follow a crowd, we have purchased an Elf on the Shelf. Last year, the blogging community introduced me to this ‘phenomenon’ and I have to admit, it tickled my fancy.
If you aren’t familiar with this new Christmas tradition, the idea is in December you introduce this little Elf to your family. He has been sent by Santa to keep an eye on the hopefully ‘good’ goings on in the house, and of course report back. Every night he goes back to the North Pole to have his de-brief with the big man. Every morning when the children wake, you have moved him to a different spot to that of the previous day. That is all part of the fun as they have to find him each morning. The Elf is only with you for the month of December then he returns to Santa HQ.
I love the idea of hiding things and being creative with scenarios, for things to be found. My husband and I once played a similar game with an empty bottle of Lenor Fabric Softener, which I wanted to throw out and he wanted to keep (hoarder!) The fun and games went on for weeks until eventually we ran out of ideas. The pinnacle was when I posted the bottle to him at work. Ah, good times. Anyhow, I digress.
Secondly, I love the idea of convincing your child that the Elf has been sent by Santa to keep an eye on proceedings for the month of December. To be honest we have been using the old ‘Santa is watching you’ line since mid June, so now, to have Elf back up is most helpful.
However, I foresee two major flaws in the Elf plan:
1) You can’t touch him. If your child is anything like mine, this may be a problem. I am hoping that I am going to be proved wrong but having a ‘toy’ that he can only look at, could make for an argument or two!
2) He will suddenly vanish. So after 24 days of B growing used to seeing the little man about the house, on Christmas morning he will wake to find that his little friend has left. Suddenly, without warning and without even so much as a goodbye.
Hmmm, now tell me if I’m being dramatic but I can see abandonment issues here.
Regardless of my concerns we are going ahead with the Elf and today, 1st December, the little man will make his grand entrance. I will report back as to how it goes and please do check the Up All Hours Facebook page for daily photos as to the Elf’s whereabouts.
Happy December All.
Cool, I have one!
