“Never worry about the size of your Christmas tree. In the eyes of children, they are all 30 feet tall”
Larry Wilde, The Merry Book of Christmas
With social media, we are provided with a vivid insight into other people lives, their homes and this time of year, their festivities. Christmas is upon us and the decorations are going up.
In my head, we have a large 8ft real christmas tree, decorated with a stunning mix of festive decorations that we have gathered from our travels of the world. Under the tree, is crammed with boxes of all shapes and sizes, beautifully wrapped and finished off with ribbon.
The reality is somewhat different.
We have this…..
A fake tree which is approximately 2ft tall and makes the toddler look like a giant. If tactical about it, we can just about fit a wrapped pair of socks underneath! Oh, and it buckled under the weight of the star!
What got me was B’s amazing attitude and the wonderful innocence. When I got it out of the box and opened it up, B said, “It’s the best tree I have ever seen Mumma”. His enthusiasm spurred me on and it now has some lights on it and is looking quite cute! B’s approach to the tree reminded me that often we really over do the very simple things. I posted the photo below on the Up All Hours Instagram page recently.
Four little plastic toys I picked up in a market whilst working abroad as a present for B. They cost in total €2. He was so happy with them. If he had woken up to them on Christmas morning, I don’t doubt he would have been just as happy with them. As parents we want the absolute best for our children but can get carried away with thinking that means, bigger, better, expensive and ‘lots of’ something. Especially at this time of year.
B reminded me this week that it doesn’t.
So there you have it folks, it’s true, size doesn’t matter!
Well, not when it comes to Christmas tree’s in the eyes of a toddler anyway…..
