Sleeping 9 to 5, what a way to start to the New Year. Sleeping 9 to 5, what a way to make a living!
I read a book recently called ‘The Ultimate Guide to Waking Up Early. How to start your day at the crack of dawn and transform your life’.
It is common sense and reveals nothing groundbreaking but has given me the enthusiasm I need to make this ‘during the week’ life change.
I know what you’re thinking, surely this ‘guide’ is called Children and yes, granted I’ve haven’t had much need for an alarm clock in the last 3 and a half years. However, I am keen to use the mornings to my advantage.
Whilst I wake up early with my son, usually at around 6.30am to the tune of “Mummy I need a wee” (he knows I have to respond to that!), I am always bloody knackered. This level of knackeredness (yes, it’s a word) is without a doubt affecting my productively levels. Not good at the best of times but even worse when you are your own boss.
The problem is that I go to bed too late. On average I go to sleep at midnight and get approx 5/6 hours sleep on a good night. Simply not enough. Especially if that sleep is interrupted as it often is.
So moving forward next week I am going to head to bed at around 9pm and set my alarm for 5am.
Dreadful for the social life but hopefully good for my brain, skin and overall well being.
I have trialled this before during a particularly busy time last year and actually enjoyed it. Not only did I enjoy downtime before going to sleep but I loved the fact that I would have most of my morning emails done by 7am, before most have even woken up. At that time, I had a small office and loved the fact that I never had to sit in the morning commuter traffic, driving to work with a smug look on my face at 5.30am!
I know that I achieve more in the mornings and, in addition, it means that I can have a couple of hours in the eventing to myself and quality time with husband. At the moment my evenings mainly consist of picking at my dinner whilst watching TV, whilst on my laptop, trying to hold a conversation together with said husband.
So there you have it, New Year, new routine! I’m looking forward to giving it a go and hopefully seeing an improvement in myself and my productivity levels. Will let you know!
Oh good luck! I would love to know how you get on as would love to start doing this to go for a morning run! x
