More Than Just A Kitchen Renovation

The work is over, the results are in and it is clear that the changes we have made in our home were so much more than just a Kitchen Renovation. Who knew that renovating our kitchen would have such a positive effect on my life. My husband is the chef of the house and the kitchen is more his domain. However, I intend to improve my cooking skills and not having a fully functioning kitchen was hard. I’m sure that renovation work in any house is disruptive at the best of times, let alone when the kitchen doubles up as your home office!

But it was worth the wait. I now LOVE our little kitchen, an area which previously was hardly fit for purpose! Don’t get me wrong, the hubby made do and ensured that we didn’t go hungry (one of his wedding vows!) but it was honestly depressing.

It’s a small room and we have taken time to cleverly utilise the space there is, keeping it clean and modern but, where possible a little bit interesting. Hidden work surfaces for example add an interesting touch.

The gorgeous Duck Egg blue AGA City 60 is the main feature. It simply looks fantastic and is such a wonderful iconic addition which I am very proud to have in the house. The colour scheme is natural with oak surfaces and cream units. Taking the stainless steel from the AGA we have carried that through with little stainless steel touches.

After some debate we kept the original floor tiles which I am a big fan of. They aren’t made anymore so it was hit and miss whether we could salvage enough but thankfully we did. Whilst they aren’t the duck egg blue of the AGA I feel that they compliment it beautifully.

We turned what was the ‘Sun lounge’ aka ‘the playroom’ into a dining room, giving us space in the kitchen to turn the previously utilised dining area into a breakfast bar space. I LOVE it. It’s like having my own little coffee shop. It also means I can chat to the hubby whilst he prepares my dinners. Lucky him!!

Some features/additions that I particularly love AGA aside, the awesome butchers block which hubby bought, my gorgeous stools, extendable lamp and Newgate clock. The little items can make a big difference.

One thing I would say, it’s really changed my feelings towards our house as a whole. The house which I previously wouldn’t invite friends round too, the house which I couldn’t wait to move out of and the house which I struggled to find any connection with. Renovations although stressful and of course sometimes costly, are worth it. Making those changes can actually change how you feel in a broader sense, it clears your mind.

After all, as they say, your home is where your heart is and if you don’t like your home, it is bound to impact on other things.

So there you have it. A little insight into our little pad. We are thrilled to be welcoming the AGA magazine team into our home soon to take some ( much better!) pictures. I will be sure to report back.
