I have never known anyone to dislike jeans as much as my toddler. I place the blame firmly on his Nonna and his Bis-Nonna, as he has been programmed to be this way inclined.
I grew up with the idea of ‘getting comfy’ as soon as you cross the threshold into the house. This in my Mother’s words, which mean whipping your bra off and putting on a pair of tracksuit bottoms, aka ‘comfy trousers’. Any sort of loose-fitting cotton pant and PJ bottom also fall into this category. In her book, you quite simply can’t relax in jeans.
This wisdom has been taken so seriously by my sister that she doesn’t even own a pair of jeans. I know! Not one single pair!
No matter how hard you try to not pick up the…what shall we call them? ‘Quirky’ little things that your parents impart on you as you grow up, some do just stick. I will often find myself looking at my husband in horror as he gets himself ready to watch a film, comfy on the sofa, in a shirt and jeans. Man alive, who’s he trying to kid? That can’t actually be ‘comfy’!
Sorry, I shall return to the point. So, this quirky wisdom has been successfully passed down to my toddler who has taken it firmly on board. Perhaps a little too firmly, as I now have to wrestle with him every morning to put a pair of jeans on. Every morning I get the question, “Can I wear tracksuit bottoms today, Mumma?” Sometimes before he has even said good morning to me. Most days he relents and will put his jeans, but not without some negotiation along the lines of “OK Mumma, I’ll wear jeans but can you put tracksuit bottoms in my school bag just incase?” or “I’ve got a good idea Mumma: I’ll wear tracksuit bottoms in the car and change into jeans when we get there,” and the classic, “Mumma it’s Sunday, I’m allowed to be comfy!”
He’s hard enough to dress these days with his constant fashion demands of superhero-branded garments, short sleeves and sandals in March, but it’s all fun and games, I guess.
However, Mum, if you are ready this, stop pulling that face every time he puts a pair of jeans on. They are not the enemy!
